PUR - San Germán dominates Ponce:
sabado, 2 de mayo 2009

PONCE - Atleticos de San German, thanks to a great offensive performance by Rubén Wolkowyski, Jesse Pellot-Rosa and Martín Osimani, dominated Leones de Ponce 85-80 at Auditorio Juan ‘Pachin’ Vicens as part of the 2009 season of Baloncesto Superior Nacional.

A consistent offensive attack with a lot of passes led by point guard Martin Osimani and an intense defense left Leones without any chance of winning in their own home.

Wolkowyski, who won gold at the 20004 Olympics with Argentina, scored 22 points, shooting 8-16 from the field including four three pointers. The best scorer was Jesse Pellot-Rosa with 23 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Omar Alvarado added 11 points and Osimani finished with 8 points and 4 assists.

Both teams started their offense slowly but Atleticos established their offense led by Pellot-Rosa along with three pointers by Alvarado and Wolkowyski to finish the first quarter up 22-14.

In the second quarter Atleticos separated themselves led by Freddie Martinez who made five straight points to be up 35-25 with 3:55 left. Ponce reacted led by Lee Nailon and at halftime the score was 40-34 in favor of San German.

At halftime Ponce was led by Nailon who had 21 points while point guard Bobby Joe Hatton struggled with 3 points, shooting 1-8 from the field. San German has Pellot-Rosa and Wolkowyski with 8 points each while Alphonse Dyer netted 7 points.

Atleticos kept the lead in the third quarter but Sammy Villegas started scoring from long distance to give hope to Ponce. Bobby Joe Hatton continued with his problems in attack while San German maintained their offense with a lot of passes and without any hurry. The first 30 minutes finished 62-58.

Ponce tried to come back in the game but Wolkowyski came with his three pointer, one with 5:25 left to give his team a 70-64 lead with 5:25 and then 50 seconds later came another to be up 73-66. Ponce came back led by Nailon and Hatton but San German sealed from the free throw line with Martin Osimani and Jesse Pellot-Rosa.

In a losing effort Lee Nailon had 28 points with 15 rebounds. Bobby Joe Hatton had 17 points (6-20 fg) and Gabriel “Pirulo” Colón 13. Nigel Dixon had 6 rebounds and was scoreless in 15 minutes.

In other games, Marcus Fizer scored 27 points and David Cortes to lead Arecibo over Guaynabo 91-80.

Finally Carolina defeated Grises de Humacao 100-93 where Alejandro "Bimbo" Carmona had 25 points and Ebi Ere 16. In a losing effort Ansel Guzmán netted 28 points.
